Club 40 Restaurant, Washington, PA 15301

I haven't eaten at Club 40 in several years. It's located about 2 miles or so west of Washington right on US route 40 at the top of what we locals still call Lincoln Hill. So, I discovered a coupon today for the restaurant in the locally distributed Clipper Magazine and decided to give it a shot again. I can remember many years ago (probably 30) a group of friends and I used to go there religiously after our club meeting at the Washington County Airport on the first Friday of the month and get great food and (many) pitchers of beer. They had the best steak sandwiches and a really good fishtail with hot sausage sauce over it. The beer was good too. Anyway, I took a friend out there today for dinner and we decided to try the fishtail if they still had it.

When we got there it was around 6pm, certainly dinner time on a Friday night and were somewhat surprised to find hardly anyone in the place. In talking with the waitress it was determined that they still offered the fish with the sauce as an entrée, so we both decided to give it a try. My mouth was watering because I knew how good it used to be and was looking forward to a delicious experience. When they served the coleslaw it was loaded with horseradish and had way too much dressing. After that disappointment came the fish and the home fries. The home fries were greasy and not at all palatable to either one of us. The fish was in a word.. disgustingly terrible. It certainly wasn't the old fishtail at all or even close to it. The whole meal was in the category of slop. Now I know why there were so few patrons in the joint. The food we had was lousy. The beer was still good.

From what I understand the restaurant has changed hands a number of times over the years since the original owners, unfortunately the quality of the food has not come along with the changes. Too bad, it used to be a great place to eat. I can only give it a one star rating and not recommend it at all.
